“1 MAN WITH A GUN CAN CONTROL 100 WITHOUT ONE”. This quote by Vladimir Lenin, commonly recognised as the father of modern socialism illustrates the control that a socialist political system exercises over its society. Therefore, it is inevitable that there will be drastic social and individual upheaval if a political system such as this is dismembered. Wolfgang Becker, director of the tragicomedy film ‘Goodbye Lenin’ and photojournalist Jean-Claude Coutasse, through their compositions, explore the consequences that occur due to shifts in political doctrines. Becker utilises the protagonist, Alex and his peevish relationship with his mother to reflect more broadly on the effects of the Berlin Wall falling in 1990 on the society of East Germany and the individuals who constituted it. Coutasse also depicts the severe impacts of the political system on the individual and society through his manipulation of filmic and visual techniques. Throughout this response it will become apparent that composers do effectively explore the drastic impacts of political upheaval on individuals and societies.
